The best and worst motorway services in England have been ranked, and a couple from the North West have made their way onto the list - and it’s not good news.
Let’s start with the very worst, which is Severn View services overlooking the Severn Bridge on the M48 in Gloucestershire, scoring a customer satisfaction rating of just 72%.
According to recent Google reviews, it’s ‘tired and overdue a refit’, ‘not very clean’, and the restaurant had ‘flies buzzing about’. The toilets were described as ‘grim’, ‘falling apart’, and ‘dismal’.
The survey by watchdog Transport Focus found Burtonwood on the M62 in Cheshire was the second lowest ranked services (only 73% of visitors were satisfied), followed by Cullompton on the M5 in Devon (74%), Frankley southbound on the M5 in Worcestershire (75%), and Charnock Richard southbound on the M6 in Lancashire (77%).
When it came to the best services on offer, Norton Canes on the M6 Toll in Staffordshire came top for the second year running, boasting an impressive 99% satisfaction rating.
We are so proud of our team. Yesterday Norton Canes secured the number one spot in the 2019 @TransportFocus customer survey. This was followed by Heston services on the M4 westbound in Greater London, Gloucester southbound on the M5, Stafford northbound on the M6, and South Mimms on the M25 in Hertfordshire.
Transport Focus chief executive Anthony Smith said:
Motorway users tell us they have a good experience when visiting service areas, but it’s clear that many do not feel the experience is good value for money. They want pleasant, well maintained facilities with good quality food choices. Motorway services continue to play an important safety role, providing drivers with the opportunity to take a break.
