Lunya announce permanent closure of Manchester restaurant

The popular Spanish and Catalonian restaurant has been at Barton Arcade since 2015, but will now close its doors forever.

Beloved city centre tapas restaurant Lunya is shutting its Deansgate doors for good due to the “devastating” impact of lockdown.

Owners Peter and Elaine Kinsella published a statement on Monday (8 June) revealing that the Barton Arcade branch, which has stood since 2015, would not reopen once government restrictions have been lifted.

The two Lunya restaurants in Liverpool, however, are still planning to welcome back customers when they are permitted to do so.

Mr. Kinsella had previously published an open letter to the government explaining how he would “never be able to repay” loans, expressing how much he feared for his team’s jobs.

Now the restaurant has been forced to take “the very difficult decision” to close in Manchester.

Lunya’s statement reads: “We have been in discussions with our Manchester landlord, our lenders and government agencies trying to secure additional funding and support which could help, but we have been unsuccessful in most of this, and there is no option that we can find that means Lunya Manchester can be viable.”

The restaurant has said will do everything possible to keep its Manchester staff employed through the furlough scheme before they are made redundant, adding that they “will work tirelessly to support them in trying to find alternative jobs.”

Despite the site closure, Lunya will continue to deliver to Manchester and provide click and collect services at Barton Arcade until the end of June.

The restaurant is also planning to run cheese, wine, sherry tastings and food and drink quizzes from different city centre venues in the future.

“It will be more ‘hasta pronto’ rather than ‘adios’,” commented the owners.

“Manchester hasn’t seen the last of us.”
