Napping is officially good for you, research finds

Let’s be honest, we all already know that napping is definitely good for you, but now we have official research to prove it.

A new study has found that having a good old nap during the day is a great choice, as it helps people to process difficult problems.

The research comes from the University of Bristol, and has been published in the Journal of Sleep Research. According to their findings, a period of sleep could help when it comes to weighing up the pros and cons before making a difficult decision.

The study was funded by the Medical Research Council, and sixteen people took part in it. They had EEGs attached to their heads to read their electrical brain activity.

They found that during short periods of sleep we process unconscious information and problem solving, meaning naps could help us to solve difficult decisions.

Dr Liz Coulthard, Consultant Senior Lecturer in Dementia Neurology at the University of Bristol, said:

The findings are remarkable in that they can occur in the absence of initial intentional, conscious awareness, by processing of implicitly presented cues beneath participants' conscious awareness. Further research in a larger sample size is needed to compare if and how the findings differ between ages, and investigation of underlying neural mechanisms.

So the next time someone tells you to sleep on it, it’s probably best to listen.
