In some good news for young people, 16-18 years olds will soon be able to get free bus travel around Greater Manchester.

Under the scheme they’ll be able to apply for an Our Pass travel card, which will get you on any bus in the region for free, seven days a week with no time restrictions on journeys.

Teenagers will be able to apply for Our Pass from today, with the cards being sent out in August ready to use from September.

The initiative is being launched by the Greater Manchester Metro Mayor, Andy Burnham, who says it could save young people and their families over £500 a year.

Mr Burnham said:

I hope that Our Pass will change the lives of young people across Greater Manchester. For too long they have been Westminster's target for cuts and negative publicity. In Greater Manchester we are using devolution to make young people our priority for investment. Our Pass is designed to send everyone growing up here a simple message - we believe in you and want you to have high ambitions for where you can go and what you can achieve. This amazing place is yours to explore, to shape and to build for the future.

JD Sports will sponsor the two-year pilot programme, and besides the free travel participants will also get access to a range of sport, culture and leisure opportunities.

Applications for Our Pass include a one-off admin fee of £10, and they are available to pre-order from today, Monday July 1st. They’ll be activated and ready to use on Sunday September 1st.
