Boris Johnson has come out in support of Dominic Cummings at today’s coronavirus press conference.
The prime minister says his key adviser “followed the instincts of every father” and has in every respect acted “responsibly and legally” after claims he broke the lockdown rules.
Cummings, who is under pressure to resign, said he did not travel to Durham a second time when he was asked by reporters on his doorstep today, before going to Downing Street.
The aide has come under intense scrutiny following allegations he broke the government’s lockdown rules on several occasions after he and his wife contracted coronavirus
Johnson quickly changed the subject to say that he believes the country is in a position to move to phase two of the lockdown easing of restrictions, which would see Reception, Year One and Year Six pupils return to school from 1 June.
We imagine the atmosphere will change slightly during questions shortly.
