Cafe asks customers to wear swimming noodle hats to enforce social distancing

We’re being told we’ll have to adjust to a “new normal” when lockdown ends.

But nobody could have anticipated this would involve wearing helicopter-style headgear.

One cafe in Germany has told its customers they can enjoy food and drink outdoors just like the old days… on the condition they wear straw hats taped with swimming pool noodles.

Cafe & Konditorei Rothe in Schwerin introduced the measure to help enforce social distancing – and posted images to their Facebook page earlier this week.

Welcome to the new normal.

Society in Germany is tiptoeing towards normality following a long stretch indoors, with cafes and bars permitted to trade provided they introduce the 2m rule and do everything they can to keep surroundings area disinfected and clean.

The UK is considered to be a couple of weeks behind its European neighbours in terms of reopening, but it’ll be interesting to see if restaurants introduce similarly innovative measures to keep patrons a safe distance apart.

We never thought it’d come to this. But, if that’s the price of enjoying a sunshine pint in 2020, you can bet we’ll oblige.

After a few beers you’d probably want to try on a hat like this, anyway…
