Swan nests on the canal path linking Little Lever and Bury have been subjected to vandalism this week – with residents reporting that eggs have been shattered and bricks thrown at birds.

The acts of animal cruelty allegedly occurred on Wednesday 28 May, with a passerby catching a group of teenagers deliberately destroying a nearby nest.

According to The Bolton News, one resident has also claimed to have witnessed people hurling bricks at swans and “kicking ducks into the canal.”

Anyone walking on the path who spots an injured bird is being advised not to approach it but to contact the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) instead.

A spokeswoman for the RSPCA confirmed that the animal support organisation would be investigating the reports of vandalism and appealed for anyone with any knowledge to come forwards.

The RSPCA are available on 0300 1234 999.
