A Tesco employee in Liverpool who was dressed up as Santa was attacked in a grotto by a shoplifter today.

Merseyside Police have confirmed that the incident happened at the West Derby supermarket in Liverpool at 2pm this afternoon when a "furious" shoplifter allegedly attacked the staff member.

According to the police, a second shoplifter was also involved but it is not clear if he was involved in the assault.

A man, who spoke to the Liverpool Echo, said a man was shouting at the Santa Claus before he "attacked him."

The same man also explained how Tesco closed the store immediately after the fight, which saw both men "rolling around on the floor" of the shop.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Police received a call around 2pm to the Tesco on Deysbrook Lane.

"The incident involved two shoplifters and one of the shoplifters assaulted a member of staff. One male has been arrested for theft."

A lively one down the M62 today indeed. Merry Christmas, everyone!
