A Mancunian chef has set up a project to help feed local military veterans who are shielding during lockdown across the borough.
The Veterans Food Co was set up by Noel Goulding to feed military veterans at a time when they need it most.
In light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Noel and his team have been responding to crisis by helping to set up production kitchens in Salford, Tameside, Trafford, Stockport and Rochdale to provide thousands of meals for veterans and their families who may be shielding, or vulnerable.
Once cooked and delivered, the meals are delivered directly to those in need.
Noel was a chef on board the QE2 cruise ship in the 1980s, feeding hundreds of troops when the liner diverted south during the Falklands War and he decided to feed the military community all over again after he began making meals for a paralysed former paratrooper, Mr Wayne Rostron, and his wife who has kidney disease.
Speaking to Forces News, Mr Rostron said: “I don’t know what to say other than, yeah, he’s doing a phenomenal job with virtually no financial support, just a lot of love and a willingness to help. Without Noel sending us freshly-prepared food, yeah I would struggle, I really would.”
He continued: “Veterans helping veterans – that’s what it’s all about. We look after each other, we’re a big family and although I’m not serving anymore, it’s nice to feel that again.”
“I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s just there again.”
What started as a simple idea has now expanded to five industrial kitchens and when it comes to the future of The Veterans Food Co, Mr Goulding said: “I don’t know where it’s going to end to be truthful, but if it continues like this, what we will do is, we’ll just open up more kitchens.”
“As the demand grows, we’ll just open up more kitchens.”
