Iconic lyrics from songs by some of Manchester’s most famous bands and artists are to appear in the city centre this weekend for a very “heartwarming” reason.
It’s all part of a newly-launched campaign by North West Cancer Research – an independent charity dedicated to putting the region’s cancer needs first, and funding lifesaving research and education to tackle the cause, improve the care, and find the cure for cancer – which is called #OurRegionOurWords, and is committed to raising awareness of its life saving work across the North West of England and North Wales.
It comes after a recent study highlighted by the charity in its 2021 North West Regional Report found that residents living in the region are 25% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than in the rest of the UK.
The campaign will feature messages of hope in the form of lyrics made famous by high profile local artists and bands.
The words have been chosen to reflect the experiences facing those affected by cancer.

Manchester-based rock band, New Order, and Liverpool’s The Farm – two of several artists whose renowned work has inspired some of the words featured throughout the activation – have pledged their support for the charity’s campaign, which kicked-off with an event at Liverpool One this past weekend and saw a prominent walkway branded with lyrics made famous by Liverpool-based musicians.
A similar crossing takeover will take place at Spinningfields this weekend.

As well as the two launch events, the charity’s wider campaign will also feature many lyrics displayed across billboards, buses, and street hubs, as well as digitally and across social media until mid-April.
Those living in Chester, Blackpool, Wigan, Preston, and Llandudno will also have the chance to spot lyrics inspired by the work of local bands in their area.
Speaking on the important campaign ahead of its arrival in Manchester city centre this weekend, Alastair Richards – CEO at North West Cancer Research – said: “For over 70 years, North West Cancer Research has been independently funding life-saving research and strategies designed to support those living with and beyond cancer in the North West of England and North Wales.

“Tackling the challenge of cancer requires a localised approach that understands the unique nature of each region, and this is especially pertinent for our work, given the increased likelihood of developing cancer if you live here.
“Inspired by our region’s love for music and passion for its homegrown heroes, we hope this campaign will resonate with people far and wide.”

Science and Industry Museum reveals ‘gloriously gross’ half term events lineup

One of Manchester’s most-visited museums has unveiled its exciting events lineup ahead of half term in a couple of weeks time.
Fancy diving into the “gloriously gross” world of our brilliant bodies?
It’s certainly not an invite you get every day, but as schools across Greater Manchester break up for half term at the end of this month, and parents and carers gear up to entertain the little ones, the Science and Industry Museum has, thankfully, just announced a wide range of events and activities especially for the holidays.
Anyone who considers themselves to be “curious about the incredible inner workings of the human body” are invited to join in with the series of anatomy-themed special events, star-studded appearances, and half term transformations.
And the best bit is that a good chunk of the events planned are actually open for you to get involved with for completely free of charge.
As the curtains on Operation Ouch! are due to close for good on Sunday 9 June, the museum has chosen to dedicate the entire month of May to celebrating the record-breaking exhibition and making sure it goes out in “a blaze of glorious grossness” by having it inspire all the upcoming ‘brilliant bodies’ events – and this half term is no different.

As well as exploring the exhibition before it closes, mini Mancs can also bring a bear (or any soft squishy friend) to the museum and take them round the departments of the ‘Teddy Hospital’, as well as learn all about looking after their brains, bones, and bottoms with fun and fascinating activities, and find out how their skeleton works, what their poo is made of, and why we have blood.
The museum‘s team of Explainers will also be back in action this half term.
They’ll be putting on interactive science shows packed with “fun facts and wow moments” that explore how and why our bodies are all the same, but different too.

Away from the ‘brilliant bodies’ events, if you haven’t had the chance the make the most of the museum’s smash-hit gaming exhibition, Power UP, then this upcoming half term is the ideal time to do so.
Revolution Manchester, the museum’s interactive Experiment gallery, and the Textiles Gallery are also open for exploring for free all throughout the half term week.

Colour analysis is a trend which has taken over TikTok, designed to assign individuals with their most flattering colours based on complexations, skin tones and other factors.
People can learn the dos and don’ts of colour at Cheshire Oaks with Kate Harrison and EWA.
The 20 minute one-to-one consultations will take place within the beautiful Spring Garden opposite Under Armour.

Shoppers can sit back and relax while more than 30 different fabric swatches are draped across your shoulders to determine your perfect colour palette.
