Stockport County secure promotion back to League One after 16 years
They've been a cut above the rest for the bulk of the season. So well deserved.
They’ve done it: Stockport County have been promoted back into League One with a 2-0 win over Morecambe FC, seeing them return to the English third division after 16 years.
Having been sat at the top of the table for the bulk of the season, the Hatters came into Saturday’s home game knowing that they only needed a point to climb out of League Two having only managed to end an 11-year exile from the EFL back in 2021/22.
Only a couple of years on and now the Greater Manchester side has managed to secure promotion with a fairly comfortable victory and time to spare, with all the potential to lift the trophy and come up as champions – which manager Dave Challinor has insisted is the only way squad want to do it.
Just look at how much it means:
It was a familiar face opening the scoring as County’s top scorer made it 20 goals for the season to send Edgeley Park into early raptures.
Stockport locals had already been dreaming long before these last few weeks as demonstrably one of the best teams for most of the year but it felt it touching distance at this point.
Then jumped up Fraser Horsfall – perhaps not the likeliest of scorers but certainly more than capable of climbing at the back post to power home a header, which is exactly what he did to tie a ribbon on the definitive result.
Here was the moment the final whistle blew:

With title rivals and celebrity-backed Wrexham AFC also securing promotion with a 6-0 battering of Forest Green Rovers, it’s going to be a great shoot-out for the top spot and an electric end to the season as we wait to see who will win the league with just a few fixtures left to go.
All that being said, whether you’re a Stockport County fan or not, what a job Dave Challinor has done in the short time he’s been at the club.
From languishing in the National League for over a decade to being back where a ground like theirs deserves to be, they’re sure to be a great addition to League One next season.
Well done to the Hatters and all the best to the County fans who we’re sure are going to make the most of the weekend celebrations.
