Salford residents who are heading to the polls this Thursday can make the most of free e-scooter rides.
With the General Election literally just a few days away now, and millions of people nationwide preparing to cast their all-important vote in what could be a historic political event, anyone who lives in Salford will be able to get themselves to their assigned polling station and back, all without having to pay a single penny.
That’s because Lime, which is the Greater Manchester city’s provider of shared e-scooters, has announced that it’s offering two free 15-minute rides on its vehicles this Thursday (4 July).

The initiative is part of its ‘Lime to the Polls’ programme – which initially launched back in 2018 – being run to support the national ‘Give an X’ youth campaign run by Shape History, #iWillMovement, and My Life My Say.
It comes after it was found that, shockingly, one in three young people in England are not registered to vote, and almost half (44%) of those aged 18-34 believe their vote won’t make a difference.

The initiative is aiming to combat common barriers to voting – such as the cost of travel, or lack of car ownership, by providing riders with access to a complimentary mode of transport.

On Election Day this Thursday, both new and existing riders in Salford will be able to redeem two free 15-minute rides in the Lime App, and all they’ll have to do is use the promotional code: UKELECTION2024.

Alice Pleasant, who is the Public Affairs Manager at Lime UKI, says access to “affordable and convenient” transport options should “never be a barrier to voting”.
“Lime is delighted to be providing voters with free transport options to get to the voting booths,” she added.
“We’re proud to play our part in enabling Lime riders to get to the polls and participate in the upcoming General Election through our Lime to the Polls programme with the ‘Give an X’ campaign.”

Stevie Nicks’ Manchester gig at Co-op Live quietly postponed
Daisy Jackson
A huge Stevie Nicks gig that was set to take place in Manchester this week has been postponed.
The rock legend, famed for her work with Fleetwood Mac as well as her impressive solo career, was meant to play at the Co-op Live on Tuesday 9 July.
But due an injury, the star has now pulled out of the scheduled gig, as well as her Glasgow date which was called off just hours before doors opened.
In a statement shared on Instagram stories over the weekend, it was announced that Stevie Nicks requires a ‘minor surgical procedure’ which will put her out of action for ‘a few days’.
A new date for Stevie Nicks’ Manchester show hasn’t yet been announced.
It’s thought that she will still be able to go ahead with her huge outdoor show at Hyde Park in London this weekend.
It’s left fans and ticket-holders gutted.
One person wrote: “Stevie nicks manchester POSTPONED my week can’t get worse.”
Another said: “Absolutely devastated that Stevie has postponed her Manchester gig. I’ve been so excited for months.”
Someone else posted: “Wishing Stevie Nicks a very speedy recovery. A bit gutted that her Manchester show is postponed but her health is the most important thing. I honestly don’t know how artists in their mid 70s still tour. It must be unbelievably exhausting… Respect!!”
Stevie Nicks’ scheduled performances in Glasgow Saturday 6 July and Manchester Tuesday 9 July have been postponed.
And then, of course, there were plenty of comments on the Co-op Live’s page yelling for new Olivia Rodrigo dates to be announced.
The full statement shared on Stevie Nicks’ Instagram page said: “Due to a recent leg injury requiring a minor surgical procedure that will need a few days of recovery time, Stevie Nicks’ scheduled performances in Glasgow Saturday 6 July and Manchester Tuesday 9 July have been postponed.
“More information will be available at point of purchase, ticketholders are advised to hold on to their tickets as rescheduled dates will be announced soon.
“Stevie looks forward to seeing everyone at Hyde Park in London.”
Warning to motorists ahead of several overnight closures on M6 near Wigan for ‘complete resurfacing’
Emily Sergeant
Motorists are being warned of several overnight closures set to take place on the M6 near Wigan over the next few weeks.
As part of its ongoing ‘Warrington to Wigan Upgrade’ project, National Highways has now released the latest dates for overnight closures on the M6 – which will begin early this week, and run over the next couple of weeks.
Having started back in March 2021, the upgrade project involves the Government-owned company adding new emergency areas and technology, and a lane in each direction to the motorway between junctions 21a and junction 26, as well as resurfacing all four lanes of the carriageway across sections of the route between Croft and Orrell interchanges.
These next closures will be put in place so that “complete resurfacing” work can be carried out.
Most daytime activities on the project have now been completed, according to National Highways, however, overnight work will still need to be carried out to continue the installing of gantry signs, other signs, and to resurface what will be the new lanes two and three of the motorway.

The overnight carriageway closures – which will be carried out from 9pm to 6am – are due to the size of the equipment required for the resurfacing.
The first closure will be put in place on the M6 northbound junction 23 to 26 this evening (8 July), with the final closure in the scheme being the M6 northbound junction 21a to 22 on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 July.
The full list of closures are as follows:
M6 northbound junction 23 to 26 – closed tonight (Monday 8 July) and Wednesday 17 July
M6 southbound junction 26 to 23 – closed Tuesday 9 July
M6 southbound junction 23 to 22 – closed Wednesday 10 and Friday 12 July
M6 northbound junction 22 to 23 – closed Thursday 11 and Tuesday 16 July
M6 southbound junction 22 to 21a – closed Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 July
M6 northbound junction 21a to 22 – closed Thursday 18 and Friday 19 July
National Highways says the precise dates and times of the work may be subject to change due to “weather conditions” or “unforeseen circumstances”.
Clearly signed diversions will be in place overnight when a carriageway is closed.
