Sporting CP manager Rúben Amorim emerges as heavy frontrunner for Manchester United job

Not everyone is so convinced it would be the right appointment for either party, however.

A strong favourite for the top job at Manchester United looks to have already emerged as current Sporting Clube de Portugal manager Rúben Amorim has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Previous head coach Erik ten Hag was ultimately relieved of his duties at the start of the week following a poor run of results which concluded with his final game and defeat against West Ham in the Premier League this past Sunday.

ten Hag’s sacking didn’t exactly come as a surprise, even if his new deal back in July does now seem a bit obsolete; it felt like a matter of when, not if and after the Red Devils found themselves sat in just 14th with just one win in his last eight games, there was only ever going to be one outcome.

Now though, 39-year-old Rúben Amorim has been heavily linked with the Man United manager’s role and, as per multiple reports, looks to be keen on taking the job.

The Athletic broke the news on Monday evening, revealing that Amorim is “open to talking” with United over the vacancy despite making a promising start to the season in Portugal.

Other outlets like The Telegraph have even claimed that the former midfielder is now pushing for the switch and that the only obstacle that remains is how open his current employers are to letting him go, noting that he has a release clause of around £8.3 million to release him from his contract.

Under the Lisbon native, Sporting CP have won each of their opening nine games so far this campaign, scoring 30 goals and conceding just two, as well as helping lead ‘Leões’ to their first league title in 19 years back in 2021 following his debut season.

He has since gone on to win the Liga Portugal for a second time last season, as well as a total of four domestic league cups – three at Sporting and one with his previous club FC Braga back in 19/20 – as well as the Portuguese Super Cup, boasting a win rate of 71.73%. Undeniably impressive stats.

Regardless, although he has previously been linked with Liverpool and even tipped to be Pep Guardiola’s successor at Manchester City, not everyone is confident he’s ready for a move to the Premier League yet, or more accurately, that his style will translate so easily to the English game.

Yes, we’re aware that the last one ends rather very sardonically but still, the Manchester-based comedian makes a good point, as do both of these posts: there seems to be a pattern to post-Fergie United that inevitably reoccurs when the hire and fire carousel starts turning.

Should INEOS end up pulling the trigger on Amorim, it’s thought that the signing could be completed very soon, with interim coach and club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy only expected to be in charge for the Leicester game this weekend.

Fabrizio Romano has already claimed that an agreement between the club and the coach is now fully in place, meaning it’s just down to sorting appropriate compensation with Sporting.

As for whether Amorim will settle in at United and, indeed, cut the mustard as a Premier League-level manager, only time will tell. Football analyst Alex Barker certainly has some interesting thoughts:
