A member of the privileged ‘Big Four’ and operator of the world’s largest online marketplace is opening a corporate office in the city centre.
Amazon's arrival is a reflection of Manchester's growing status in the tech world and is predicted to create as many as 600 jobs - including roles for software engineers, applied scientists and 'solutions architects’.
The grand opening is also being celebrated with a Future Engineer Bursary designed to fund computer science undergraduate studies at the University of Manchester for those from low-income backgrounds.
Doug Gurr, Amazon's UK country manager, said: "I am delighted we're opening our first corporate office in the north of England today.
"Manchester offers an incredible talent pool, a thriving hub of fast-growing UK tech start-ups and is a centre of academic and intellectual excellence.
"We are already actively hiring from a range of skill-sets for our new Manchester office, so if you've always wanted to build the future, come build it with us."
