Huge cordon in place in Manchester city centre after body pulled from River Irwell

The body of a man has tragically been found in the River Irwell this afternoon.

A large police cordon is currently in place in the area around the Lowry Hotel in Salford.

Officers were called to reports of a body in the water at around 10.30am on Wednseday 3 July.

Tragically, a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A large emergency services presence remains at the busy area on the outskirts of the city centre.

The Trinity footbridge that crosses the River Irwell between St Mary’s Parsonage and The Lowry Hotel has been closed off.

A GMP statement said: “Officers were called to a report of a body in the water at Dantzic Street in Manchester city centre just after 10.30am today (Wednesday 3 July).

“Emergency services attended and a man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries remain on-going.”
