The Greater Manchester Metrolink network has completely closed down following an underground fire on Wednesday (June 9).

Police have confirmed a blaze had broken out between Victoria and Shudehill, causing an “electrical issue” on Balloon Street.

Two people have apparently suffered “minor injuries”.

Services on Metrolink routes have been suspended until further notice.

Go North West stated: “Police Incident involving a fire under ground – Corporation St between Hunts Bank and Ring Rd closed Towards Manchester Via Angel St and Rochdale Rd Towards Cheetham Hill Via Hunts Bank, Victoria St and Cheetham Hill Rd.”

Anyone in possession of a Metrolink tram pass or ticket can use these on local bus services.

Passengers can also use Metrolink tickets on Network Rail services to Ashton, Rochdale Town Centre, East Didsbury and Altrincham.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has said “disruption is likely to continue until lunchtime.”
