Hundreds of people in homes and businesses were evacuated on Thursday evening (10 September) after a ‘suspicious item’ was reported at a property on Chester Road in Hazel Grove.

Police promptly cordoned off the scene after discovering the item at around 4.15pm; proceeding to clear surrounding premises on London Road, Chester Road and Hatherlow Lane.

The precautionary measures resulted in workers at takeaways, pubs and restaurants being urged to leave the area whilst officers investigated.

Several emergency service vehicles remained at the scene with the cordon kept in place for several hours.

More police tape was also placed around Pepper Road.

Shortly after 8pm, police confirmed that the cordon was set to be removed after establishing that there was “no risk” to residents.

“The incident in Hazel Grove in Stockport has now ended and the cordon will be lifted shortly,” GMP tweeted from their social media account.

“Following extensive enquiries, officers have established that there is no risk to the public.

“Thank you for your patience whilst we responded.”
