IKEA is to close all its UK stores at 6pm tomorrow due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Swedish furniture chain confirmed the temporary measures this evening. Shoppers will still be able to buy items from Ikea online or through the store's app.
The chain will also still be making contact-free deliveries.
1/3 These are extraordinary times & our absolute priority is to ensure the health & safety of our customers & co-workers. As a precautionary measure against the ongoing risk of COVID-19, we will temporarily close all UK & Ireland stores to customers on 20th March, 6pm.— IKEA UK (@IKEAUK) March 19, 2020
Ikea had already closed its restaurants, cafes and bistros following the spread of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, but these new measures will see all of its stores closed until further notice.
It's not clear when they will re-open them.
IKEA's country retail manager and chief sustainability officer, Peter Jelkeby, said: "These are extraordinary times, and our absolute priority is to ensure the health and safety of our customers and co-workers.
"We have listened carefully to them, to the advice of the UK and Ireland governments, and have been closely monitoring the situation as this evolves.
"This is the right decision for us to take at this point. We look forward to welcoming our customers back to our stores in the future."
