Thousands of people have been trying to find shelter at Parklife festival after the heavens well and truly opened and rain lashed down on Heaton Park.

The festival was stopped mid-afternoon after a massive thunderstorm rolled over the site.

Bolts of lightning were seen crashing overhead as 70,000 festival-goers scrambled for the tents, ponchos – and even boxes to put on their heads.

Music fans were also told to move at least three metres away from any metal structures, and not to use their phones or selfie sticks.

The dramatic downpour followed a morning of baking hot sunshine and temperatures up to 28 degrees.
