Greater Manchester Police confirmed that officers were called by the shopping centre’s security to the shocking incident yesterday, where the male had been detained by staff after spitting at security and attacking members of the public.

Eyewitnesses described the male’s behaviour as “aggressive”.

Officers arrested him on suspicion of three counts of assault and one count of criminal damage, and he was also arrested for one count of racially-aggravated assault.

The man remains in custody for questioning.

In a statement shared to the GMP Trafford South Facebook page yesterday, an officer explained: “A 20 year old male has been arrested on suspicion of 3 counts of assault, 1 count of racially aggravated assault and 1 count of criminal damage at the Trafford Centre on Tuesday 31st August 2021.

“Police were called by Trafford Centre security shortly before 6pm to reports of an aggressive male being detained by security on the shopping mall who had allegedly been assaulting and spitting at security staff and members of the public.

“Officers from B Relief Response Team responded quickly and assisted security in detaining the male who was arrested and remains in custody for questioning.”
