A vehicle collision in Manchester city centre involving a prison van has made its way onto twitter this morning.

Photos of the incident emerged on the social media platform shortly after Transport for Greater Manchester announced Portland Street had closed in both directions due to a serious RTC (road traffic collision).

Minutes after TfGM tweeted this news, users on twitter took to the platform to post photos of a prison van that has collided into the front of a Caffe Nero.

One twitter user wrote: "Looks like there has been a prison van hijack/breakout attempt on Portland Street."

While another tweeted:"Someones jumped a prison van central Manchester.

It has not yet been confirmed by Greater Manchester Police as to what caused the road traffic collision, but it is being treated as serious.

The area, and the incident, has since been contained by GMP officers.

More to follow.
