We Love MCR charity announces new grants worth £216,000 to 22 local charities

We Love MCR

We Love MCR is adding £216,000 to its COVID-19 response fund for local frontline organisations - taking the total raised to over £650,000 so far.

Hundreds of people have helped to top up the charity's support page via JustGiving in the past six weeks - with all proceeds going to vital causes in the community.

This latest cash injection from We Love MCR will see grants awarded to organisations providing advice and protection, positive engagement of young people, mental health/wellbeing in isolation and food poverty relief services.

The frontline charities receiving funds in this latest package include Manchester Women’s Aid, Independent Choices (Domestic Violence Helpline), Homestart, Big Manchester Partnership (with Barnado’s), City in the Community, Manchester Youth Zone, The A6 Partnership, East Manchester Play and Youth Partnership and The Children’s Society.

Grants will also be distributed to the Greater Manchester Law Centre, Open Kitchen, Humans Mcr, Rainbow Surprise, The Mustard Tree and The Bread and Butter Thing.

Jason Tetley from Greater Manchester Law Centre - which is receiving a Response Fund grant of £18,500 - commented: "We’re thrilled by this amazing grant from the We Love MCR Charity. It means we can now support tenants across the City struggling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We believe over 40,000 people in Manchester have lost their jobs over the past 2 months, and many of these will be struggling financially. This grant means we can advise, support and represent tenants, and particularly those at risk of eviction over the coming months.

"We will try to ensure that no-one in Manchester loses their home as a result of this unprecedented crisis.”

Gail Heath, CEO at The Pankhurst Trust (incorporating Manchester Women’s Aid) said: “This grant means we can help 8 women and their children to move on from their refuge places into safe new accommodation now. It also means we can now offer their vital refuge places to 8 families in desperate need of a place of safety to flee to. Literally this could save lives, and we appreciate this vital support.”

Ged Carter, Development Manager at We Love MCR said: “We’re immensely proud of the differences we’re making in the COVID crisis. Today’s new grants enable us to make a difference to thousands more Mancunians facing tough times."

He continued: "Our grants today will provide hope, comfort, support and food to our neighbours who need it most. The differences we make are only limited by the money we receive in donations. If you can afford to, please donate to our Response Fund today, to help us to carry on our vital work.”

We Love MCR has released money from its reserves to keep the Response Fund going, but the charity is also issuing an urgent call for further donations so essential services can continue to receive financial support.

Donations can be made online or by texting MANCHESTER 10 to 70470 to donate £10 (and this works for any number from £1 to £20. Texts charged at standard network rate).

Companies and major donors are encouraged to explore how they can support the Response Fund by calling 07809 284920.
