Manchester is being battered by heavy rain this morning as the summer of 2024 continues to be a big wash-out.

The city has woken up to dark skies and downpours and a feels-like temperature of just 12°C.

It follows weeks of only scattered sunshine blessing our city and some unseasonably cold weather.

There’s bad news for those of us travelling to work this morning as the heavy, persistent rain is set to continue all morning.

But the rest of the day’s weather forecast for Manchester looks like things may dry out a little in the afternoon.

Alex Burkill, Meteorologist with the Met Office, described it this morning as ‘a rather soggy Tuesday’.

The heavy rain has been caused by a low pressure weather system that pushed in overnight, with the area of low pressure and associated fronts moving in a north-easterly direction.

Temperatures across much of the UK are below average for the time of year (which is supposed to be summer, if the weather could please get the memo).

The good news is that by mid-afternoon it should brighten up slightly, with some showers still likely.

Just don’t hold your breath for being able to wear shorts or getting any sort of Vitamin D outside just yet.
