In a pretty huge bit of early tournament news, England duo Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish have both been left out of Gareth Southgate’s final squad for Euro 2024.
The Manchester United and City stars have featured heavily in both of the previous international competitions and Southgate has trusted Maguire as one of his go-to centre-backs for years now, but given his recent fitness issues, the experienced defender has unfortunately missed out.
As for Grealish, the attacking midfielder – who many cried out to be a regular starter during the last Euros campaign – just hasn’t made enough impact this season under Pep Guardiola, struggling to secure a starting spot and grabbing just six goal contributions in 36 appearances across all competitions.
As a result, the Premier League pair were said to have been cut from the England boss’ final list of 26 players set to travel to Germany on Monday, 10 June. The official squad was released shortly after the news broke, confirming the reports.

As you can see, the likes of James Maddison, Curtis Jones, James Trafford; Jarell Quansah and Jarrad Branthwaite also missed out despite having been named in the provisional 33-man squad.
This news comes after the likes of Man United forwards Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were already left out, along with former City winger Raheem Sterling following similar up-and-down club seasons.
With all of the current Manchester-based stars having been regular members of the matchday squad at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Euro 2020 and some even further back than that, these are some pretty notable exclusions, to say the least.
Reacting to the news on his end, Maguire – who the FA revealed had been undergoing a personal training programme in a race to be fit for this year’s Euros – issued an emotional statement admitting he is gutted to have fallen short.
Many fans were also wondering whether Maguire’s long-standing defensive partner Luke Shaw would be able to reach a suitable level of fitness to be named in the final squad in the eleventh hour, with left-back being one position the team is lacking in, so it’s a relief to see the United fullback restored to the team.
We’ll be backing the Three Lions all the way over the next month or so and we have every faith in the manager to pick the right team each round, especially given how much quality in depth we have.
It’s coming home.
