Boxer Tommy Fury has said he is “heartbroken” to have had to have pulled out of the upcoming Jake Paul fight.

The news broke yesterday afternoon that the 22-year-old Manchester-born former Love Island finalist, and half-brother of world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, had made the decision to withdraw from fighting controversial YouTube star Jake Paul, which was scheduled to take place in Florida on 18 December.

Fury’s team cited “medical grounds” when the withdrawal was announced.

But now, Fury has officially broken his silence on the extent of his injuries, and has explained his decision to withdraw from the fight in a video statement shared on Instagram.

Fury said he is “heartbroken” to have pulled out of the fight due to contracting a bacterial chest infection and sustaining a broken rib.

He said in his Instagram video: “I am absolutely heartbroken that I have been forced to withdraw from my fight with Jake Paul due to a bacterial chest infection and broken rib [as] the beginning of my camp was going so incredibly, and I never expected anything to come in my way from a victory on 18 December.

“I can’t express now disappointed I am and I really do hope we can get this fight rescheduled in the new year.”

“I want this fight to happen more than anything.”

Jake Paul has also spoken out about his rival Fury’s injury too, saying: “I question everything about that family. He has never accomplished anything himself [and] the only reason he is anything is because of his brother.

“He’s had a silver spoon in his mouth for his entire life [and] he has never had a real opponent – his opponents were all meant to lose.”

Fury insisted, however, that he is “not backing away from this fight”.

He made sure to extend his thanks to the people that have supported him on his journey, and acknowledged that because “the whole world wants to see this fight”, he is “hopeful” that they can make the fight happen when 2022 rolls around.
