Manchester City are being tipped to break the British transfer record this week after making a move for Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish.
Reports are suggesting the 25-year-old will make the switch to the Etihad for £100 million – making the Villa captain the most expensive player in UK football.
A nine-figure sum will see Grealish’s transfer trump both the overseas price tag paid for Paul Pogba by Manchester United – who moved to Old Trafford for £89 million in 2016 – and the domestic record – also held by United after paying £80m for Harry Maguire.
Grealish’s flair and creativity captured the imagination of fans during England’s Euro 2020 campaign and the midfielder had been tipped for a big-money move this summer – with City launching an official bid last week.
According to Sky Sports, Grealish will undergo a medical at City on Thursday (August 5).
Villa are expected to dive right into the transfer market if the Grealish transfer goes ahead.
Their current target to replace the midfielder is Todd Cantwell – who was part of Norwich’s Championship title-winning team in 2020/21.
Grealish will be City’s third transfer ahead of the upcoming season – with manager Pep Guardiola already signing goalkeeper Scott Carson on a one-year deal (following two loan spells with the club) and Argentine winger Dario Sarmiento from Estudiantes.
