Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim delivered a damning indictment of his side, posing the possibility that they might be “the worst team” in the club’s history.

Ouch.

The Portuguese coach has only been at Old Trafford for a few months but has already dished out plenty of criticism regarding his own club, having most recently insisted that everyone around Man United is “too comfortable” even after a hard-fought draw against Liverpool.

Now though, the 39-year-old has doubled down on his already strong verdict by suggesting that this current squad is at risk of going down in the footballing annals for all the wrong reasons.

Acknowledging that it certainly makes for a strong headline, as you can see, Amorim insisted that his players must come to grips with the position they are in if they are to stand any chance of improving.

This comes not only after the 3-1 home defeat to Bournemouth, in which two individual errors – one of those being a major fumble by goalkeeper André Onana – cost them points but only a few weeks after the former Sporting manager admitted that a ‘relegation battle’ wasn’t out of the question.

Amorim admitted that losing this many games and collecting just 11 points from as many league games is “unacceptable” and that he is fully aware that they now need to “survive” the current rough patch.

Put simply, he said that “everyone here is underperforming” and insisted that he is “not naive” about the amount of time he’ll realistically be given to turn things around.

The fear among fans is that the backslide continues and they start stringing together the kind of statistics that led to Erik ten Hag‘s downfall.

Reacting after the game and their record of just two wins in the Premier League, Newcastle and England legend Alan Shearer claimed that while they may not necessarily be the ‘worst’ team quite yet, he does believe they were better under ten Hag.

At present, the Red Devils sit in 13th position in the table on just 26 points and just 10 above two of the teams said to be at risk of facing the drop this season.

Meanwhile, the United Women’s team managed a 4-2 win over Man City in the WSL Manchester derby, with Ella Toone scoring against the Blues not only for the first time but going on to bag a hat-trick.
