Leading UK budget retail chain Poundland is set to trail a new home delivery service – but only for certain customers.

After being quietly launched back in February, the trial scheme – which has over 2,000 products available to order – is believed to currently only be available for 18,000 workers and “selected guests”.

It’s the first time Poundland has made its bargain products available to buy online.

The discount retailer has also said it will trial a click and collect service, although it’s not clear if it has already started doing this.

It’s said that Poundland has been working on building its digital presence since July last year as part of a huge transformation programme.

Although it hasn’t been explained how it decided which customers would take part in the trial, or whether it’s based on people who are near to its Cannock, Staffordshire store – which is the location being used to pick orders – the chain said the pilot would be opened up to the public in due course.

A spokesperson for Poundland said: “The launch of a pilot online service is just one part of our exciting transformation plans, offering customers new ranges and new services”.

David Jinks MILT – Head of Consumer Research at Parcel Hero – said: “Poundland was forced to mothball 120 of its stores last year because of the impact of COVID.

“The pandemic has taken its toll on our town centres and there’s no going back.

“Poundland has belatedly woken up and smelled its discounted coffee [and] although the initial trial is low-key, it is taking e-commerce seriously”.
