Sainsbury’s has announced that it will be introducing a new “one adult per household” shopping restriction at stores across England.

The supermarket giant is one of the first chains to re-implement an in-person shopping limit of this kind to stores nationwide and it comes amid the introduction of the government’s new three tier restrictions system aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases.

Greater Manchester is currently in Tier 2 restrictions under the new scheme.

In a statement announcing the updated single adult shopping limit following the introduction of the new three tier restrictions system, Sainsbury – which operates a substantial number of stores across Greater Manchester – said: “We are asking everyone to only send one adult per household to our shops.

“This helps us keep people a safe distance apart and also helps to reduce queues to get into stores.”

It continued: “Our store teams will be asking groups with more than one adult to choose one adult to shop and will ask other adults to wait.

“Children are welcome if they are not able to stay at home.”

Not only that, but the supermarket chain has also confirmed that it is limiting the overall number of customers allowed in its stores at one time too, and has reduced the number of checkouts in operation at branches right across the country.

This new in-store rule by Sainsbury’s also comes after many major supermarket chains in England have once again introduced buying restrictions on a number of products following rising concern over panic buying.

With the industry eager to avoid a panic buying repeat this autumn, the British Retail Consortium has urged shoppers not to change their buying habits. Andrew Opie from the British Retail Consortium told Mirror Money: “Supermarkets have put in place a range of safety measures to protect staff and customers.

“In the event of future lockdowns we urge consumers to be considerate and shop for food as they would usually during this difficult time.”

It’s advised that you always check the opening times of your local Sainsbury’s branch before making any trips in store over the coming weeks.
