A new community photography exhibition showcasing the hidden stories of people who live and work along the River Irk has opened this week across various locations in North Manchester.
The exhibition is the product of The People’s River Project – delivered by Manchester Histories and funded by Manchester City Council through their Neighbourhood Investment Fund and Economic Regeneration Fund.
The project is inspired by German socialist philosopher Friedrich Engels who wrote about the River Irk in his 1845 essay ‘The Condition of the Working Class in England’, based on his experiences in Manchester.
During the project, artist and photographer Liz Wewiora worked with various groups including Friends of Angel Meadow and the no.93 wellbeing centre through online and socially distanced workshops to create three exhibits.

Photography, poetry and cyanotype prints are on display in two outdoor exhibitions, one in Queen’s Park in Harpurhey and another in St Michael’s flags in Angel Meadows Park until June 20.

There is also a permanent exhibition of the work created by users of the no.93 wellbeing centre in the art and therapy rooms.
The photographs and poetry reflect the Irk Valley’s ever-changing landscape, exploring ideas of personal journeys, community, nature and regeneration.

The cyanotype process acts as a reminder of both the surrounding nature and the local industrial history which has shaped the Irk Valley from Engel’s period to today.
The project also features a digital walking trail around the Irk valley, which can be followed using the Love Exploring App.
The trail will guide you around the Irk valley whilst you listen to stories about the local area, shared by members of the community groups.

Lottery Winners help debut new hometown anthem ‘Song For Leigh’ at massive stadium gig

Indie pop favourites Lottery Winners smashed their first-ever solo stadium show at Leigh Sports Village at the end of May, and they also helped debut a dedicated hometown anthem for the town.
One of several current stars coming from in and around the Wigan music scene, it’s been a big few years for the Greater Manchester band, and their biggest-ever headline show on Saturday was yet more proof of just how much they’ve achieved in their career thus far.
That being said, however, this lot will never, EVER forget where they’ve been and, most importantly, where they come from.
You’ll find no better example of that than their sold-out LSV gig, which saw multiple celebrations of their local area, than one particular moment…
Posting on social media in the aftermath of the landmark live performance for the four-piece, frontman Thom Rylance wrote: “Little old Leigh, I haven’t slept a wink. I’m not sure I ever will again. I’ve never felt such a powerful punch of love hit me like that before, and I’m not even sure what to do with it all.
“Thanks isn’t enough, but let’s start there. Thank you for carrying us all this way. Thank you for making us feel special. Thank you for making all of this feel proper. Thank you to the grown-ups who trusted us with such a mammoth thing. Absolutely stupid that you let us do that, but I hope we made you proud.
“The feeling I get from looking across and seeing my best mates on the planet literally living their dream, in full HD, makes me so happy I could burst into bubbles. And thank you to Leigh. Our home. Our people. Nobody does it better. Last night was proof that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things.”
But as mentioned, perhaps the most wholesome part of the entire event was when they aired a brand-new tune created by Spirix Collective – a group of local musicians, dancers, and all-round creatives based in the heart of Leigh. Here’s what they’ve made:
What a lovely thing for everyone tied to this place.
Produced partly in an effort as part of the historic Lancashire county village’s bid to become the UK’s next first Town of Culture, it’s a track created on behalf not just of Leigh itself but to further help shine a light on the often criminally-overlooked borough of Wigan.
As for natives themselves, they signed off the milestone by adding in the caption: “Lottery Winners are massive. KOKO [Keep on keeping on].”
It’s fair to say that after seeing some of the scenes from over the weekend, we tend to agree.

Another new month is here, and summer is closer than ever.
It might not officially be summer until a few weeks time, but especially after all the sun we’ve had recently, it’s hard not to see the arrival of June as the turning of the season. The partnership is set to bring together the places the National Trust cares for and Pokémon’s spirit of play and discovery.

Thrill seekers, this one’s for you, as Zip World Manchester has launched its new Forest Tubing experience, and it’s bringing the UK’s longest outdoor tubing slide is coming to Heaton Park.
The new family‑friendly outdoor adventure gives visitors the chance to soar along two slides, winding through woodland at one of the largest parks in the North West.
Suitable for children aged four and above, visitors can book an hour-long session – with unlimited rides during that time slot – and either ride solo, or share the experience with fellow adventurers.

IRONMAN 70.3 is returning to Bolton this Sunday.
Bolton has been the proud home of the UK’s IRONMAN race since 2009, and the world-renowned triathlon is all set to take over the Greater Manchester town once again – with participants and spectators in thousands all preparing to flock to all four corners of the borough to the catch the action.
Bolton Council says a series of temporary road closures are needed to ‘ensure the safety’ of competitors and spectators.
