Manchester City have officially been crowned Premier League champions of the 2021-22 season.
After what has been one of the closest title races of the past few years, Manchester City have this afternoon finally pipped North West rivals Liverpool to the post in their final match of the Premier League’s 2021-22 season to successfully retain their title as the winners of English football’s top flight.
The sky blues beat Aston Villa 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium.
With a 4pm kick-off on the final day of the season, the Citizens walked out at their home ground to the cheers of thousands of hopeful fans, and after going 2-0 down, eventually made their dream a reality after 94-minutes thanks to two goals from İlkay Gündoğan, and one from Rodrigo, all in the second half.
The Premier League trophy is to be lifted by departing club captain Fernandinho, alongside his vice captains and fellow teammates.

Today’s victory is Manchester City’s sixth Premier League title in total since returning to the top flight in 2002, and the fourth title won under current manager, Pep Guardiola.
Liverpool this afternoon faced another Midlands side, Wolves, in their final match of the Premier League season, and claimed an impressive 3-1 victory – but it was not enough to claim the title.

Up until this Premier League title defeat, the Merseyside team were in the running for a historic quadruple-winning season, having already clinched the EFL Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, and still yet to face 2021-22 La Liga champions, Real Madrid, in the 2022 UEFA Champions League final – which takes place the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday 28 May.
Manchester City were knocked out of the 2022 UEFA Champions League in the semi-finals, when they lost to Real Madrid 5-6 on aggregate over two legs.
Further details of Manchester City’s Premier League title celebrations are to be announced in due course.
