Sale Sharks have confirmed the departure of 10 players from their squad following the end of the 2023/24 Gallagher Premiership season.

The local rugby league revealed the raft of outgoing players in an official statement on Tuesday, 18 June, seeing their total squad depth cut by around a fifth.

One of the most notable departures is long-serving Sam James, who leaves the Sale Sharks after nearly 250 appearances for the club.

Announcing the news on social media, the club insisted it comes with “a heavy heart” and wished all those exiting the “good luck” wherever they go next.

After already confirming the departures of James, Manu Tuilagi, Cobus Wiese, Cameron Neild and Agustin Creevy, forwards Tom Ellis, Cal Ford and Ewan Murphy, academy fly-half Finn Rogers and full-back Telusa Veainu are also set to leave the club.

Director of Rugby Alex Sanderson said of the news: “We’re saying goodbye to ten lads who, whether they’ve played a lot or not as much as they’d have liked, have contributed to what has been a massive squad effort this year.”

Hr went on to insist that “no one has left on bad terms and that’s a testament to the blokes they are. They’re all friends and the door is always open for them to return. It’s never nice when friends move on, but it’s been done for the right reasons on both sides.

The club went on to wholeheartedly thank “all ten players for their service to the club and we wish them all the very best for the future.”

The Greater Manchester side failed to make it beyond the group stages of the Investec Champions Cup this year but did finished fifth overall in the Betfred Super League table and make it to a second consecutive Premiership semi-final at the start of the month – ultimately beaten by Bath 31-23.

It’ll be interesting to see who Sale Sharks bring into the fold and blood in from the academy to replace the 10 players ahead of next season.
