Chips @ No 8 – Prestwich chippy once again named one of the best in the UK
Well-deserved.
Chips @ No 8 has been named one of the UK’s best chippies yet again.
The Prestwich takeaway frequently tops lists of the finest fish and chip shops in the country, and just this weekend earned its place in The Guardian’s guide.
Chips @ No 8 first opened in the Bury suburb back in 2018, flipping the traditionally chippy that’s stood here for 50 years into a slightly more modern affair.
From the map on the wall where a whiteboard marker points out where the day’s potatoes and fish have come from to the disco ball hanging from the ceiling, this isn’t your average chippy.
Their chips are cooked in beef dripping (or vegetable oil on request), which leads to the most jaw-droppingly perfect spuds, served alongside fish encased in a crisp and light batter.
Chips @ No 8 is actually on the move, a whole one door down, with plans to open a much larger space right next door.
When it opens (it’s been hit with a few delays), it will have a larger menu, more gluten-free choices, plus a dining room and an alcohol licence.
Recognising the takeaway’s brilliance, The Guardian wrote: “Until recently, this well-regarded shop was a corner site, known for a giant mural of Mark E Smith, and frying in dripping (veg oil on request).
“Now, they’ve reopened next door in order to serve more people more efficiently, though the name’s the same (@chipsno8).”
The Prestwich business said: “Nice start to the day to see The Guardian listed us in their best 20 fish and chip shops. Just imagine where we’d get if we were actually open! Chips @ No.8 MkII coming very soon!”
