The fabric of any neighbourhood is multifaceted; made up of dozens, hundreds or even thousands of different types of people.
There are families. There are friend groups. There are solitaries.
The Counter House undoubtedly took this into account when electing to brand themselves as a neighbourhood bar. They get it.
Sure enough, all these personas are in attendance the night we venture down to the characterful bar in Ancoats: parents, children and dogs; pairs of pals catching up over cocktails; and one chap who’s contentedly sat alone taking in the scenery.
But perhaps what’s so impressive about The Counter House is not the way in which they recognised the eclectic nature of their residents, but their ability to cater for each of them.
The restaurant prioritises comfort and a warm welcome - two traits we all look for in any restaurant - whilst ensuring there’s a wide array of ingredients on offer for every personality or palate.
They specialise in the healthy stuff - including posh salad bowls, hummus sharers and cold pressed juices packed with nutrients - all the while keeping a plentiful supply of comfort food and alcohol in stock.
With a sundry menu that belies its somewhat diminutive stature, The Counter House successfully doubles as both a detox centre and drinking den.
Leafy, airy interior aesthetic lets it shift seamlessly between breakfast cafe, lunch spot and nighttime bar, too, ensuring the venue is permanently fit for purpose to serve a variety of dishes from sunrise to bedtime.
Somehow, you’re able to take a seat in a wicker chair and sip on smoothie surrounded by potted plants, or prop yourself up at the bar and knock back the local lagers on draught - and you’re equally at home either way.
It should come as little surprise, then, that twelve months on from opening its doors, the independent eatery is already part of the Cutting Room square furniture and a firm neighbourhood favourite - attracting dozens of covers through morning, noon and night.
And if you needed another excuse to take a peek, it’s worth sharing that the restaurant has leapt on the January discount bandwagon.
Up until the final day of the month, Counter House are slashing the prices of their plant-based menu so you can enjoy vitamin-rich grub at half the price.
That ought to be music to the ears of anyone who’s spent the past three weeks limping along on the dregs of December’s payslip whilst attempting to turn over a new leaf.
Mains include the glazed tofu poke bowl with jasmine rice, pickled cauliflower, edamame, kimchi, fiery mayo; spiced dahl, cauliflower rice, coconut yoghurt and flatbread; and the banging southern spiced black bean burger.
If you’re heading in early there are bowls of granola and yoghurt or classic cooked breakfasts to get you going - as well as a range of pep-in-your-step health shots.
There’s still time to take advantage of the discounted health dishes before the prices hike up, too. Head to the Counter House booking page, whack ‘Reboot 2020’ into the comments box and get some nutrient-loaded plates for half the usual price, right up until January 31.
Or just sit at the bar and have a pint of Shindigger and a cheeseburger. That’s the beauty.
