Benjamin Mendy is suing Manchester City for “unauthorised deductions from wages”, it has been confirmed.
The French footballer – who signed for the Manchester club from Monaco in 2017, and won three Premier League titles during his time there, before last playing in August 2021 – has filed the “multi-million-pound claim” with the Employment Tribunal within the last few days, as confirmed to and reported on by several major news outlets this morning.
The 29-year-old defender has claimed that his former club did not pay his wages after he was charged with rape and sexual assault.
It comes after Mendy – who now plays for French Ligue 1 side Lorient, and was also notably a part of France’s World Cup-winning squad in 2018 – was found not guilty of one count of rape and one count of attempted rape by a jury in a retrial at Chester Crown Court after first being charged in mid 2021.
The footballer was also previously found not guilty of six counts of rape and one charge of sexual assault against five women in January.
The Frenchman’s Manchester City contract ended in June 2023.
Now, in a statement provided to outlets such as Sky News, BBC, and The Guardian, the player’s representative has confirmed a claim has been filed.
The statement, as provided by Nick De Marco KC to Sky News, reads: “Nick De Marco KC (instructed by Laffer Abogados (Madrid) is acting for the former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy in a multi-million-pound claim for unauthorised deductions from wages.
“Manchester City FC failed to pay Mr Mendy any wages at all from September 2021, following Mr Mendy being charged with various offence all of which he was subsequently acquitted of, until the end of his contract in June 2023.
“The claim will come before an Employment Tribunal.”
Manchester City is yet to respond or comment on the claim filed.
