A teenage girl has died after getting into difficulty in the water in Stalybridge.
An enormous search effort was launched near a body of water just off Crowswood Drive yesterday evening.
Emergency services including GMFRS and NWAS were called to reports of a person in trouble just before 6.30pm on Monday 15 August.
Tragically, it’s now been confirmed that a body was located in the water and was recovered overnight.
Identification has taken place and her family are being supported by specially trainer officers.
Detectives from Tameside CID don’t believe there are any suspicious circumstances. Enquiries are ongoing.
Detective Inspector Steven Horton said: “Yesterday evening’s events are nothing short of devastating and my thoughts are with the friends and family of the young girl who lost her life in such awful circumstances.
“We are doing all we can to support the girl’s family at this incredibly difficult time, and we are focused on ensuring they get the answers they deserve as to how this tragedy occurred.

“From our enquiries so far, we are confident that there are no suspicious circumstances and that this is such a sad reminder of the dangers of entering open water, whatever the weather.”
GMP has reminded the public to avoid being tempted to cool off in reservoirs, rivers, canals or ponds, adding: “We all want to enjoy the warm weather; please make sure you do so in a safe way. Think of your family; look out for your friends.”
