After several days of searches by underwater specialists, a body has been recovered from Dovestone Reservoir.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has confirmed it is the body of Simon Daniels.

The missing Cheshire man was believed to have been paddleboarding, along with another person, at the popular Oldham beauty spot last Sunday afternoon (20 October) when the pair sadly got into difficulty and fell into the water.

An initial large search operation was commenced by emergency services, including the Coastguard and Mountain Rescue, to locate the missing personal trainer after the person he was with was successfully recovered from the water and taken to hospital for treatment shortly after.

Specialist teams had been extensively combing the area since Sunday, but unfortunately last night (23 October) at 6:15pm, the police underwater search team discovered Mr Daniels’ body in the reservoir.

GMP has confirmed that officers have informed Mr Daniels’ family of this development, and are offering support to them.

Speaking following the tragic discovery of the body, Detective Inspector Laura Crossley, from GMP’s Oldham CID, said: “Throughout this tragic incident, we have been in close contact with Simon’s family and will continue to offer them our support as they come to terms with their loss.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious, and the scene has now been closed. A report is being prepared for the corner.”

DI Crossley says the police are appreciative of the public’s support in allowing search teams to carry out their necessary investigations.

“We understand the inconvenience this may have caused over the last few days,” DI Crossley added, “but it was important we conducted a full and thorough search for Simon.”
