‘Dangerous’ dog destroyed by police after attacking two people in Oldham

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has confirmed it has had to put down a “dangerous dog” after it attacked two people in Oldham.

The police force explained that at around 10am this past Saturday (22 October), it was called to reports that a dog that had attacked two people on Shakespeare Road.

Officers attended the scene and discovered that two women had been attacked by a dog – which was described as being “dangerous” and acting in an “aggressive manner” after it was believed to have escaped from a nearby property.

Both women had been taken to hospital to receive treatment for injuries that GMP says are “serious” but are not believed to be life-threatening.

Specialist armed officers also attended the scene given the nature of the reports, with GMP confirming that unfortunately, the seriousnesses of the incident meant that the dog had to be “destroyed as a safety precaution” due to the number of people in the area and the injuries that were caused.

A 29-year-old man has also been arrested at the scene for allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control injuring any person under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, but he has since been released on bail.

GMP says that a scene remains in place and enquiries are ongoing.
