The M62 is closed after a huge “fireball explosion” during rush hour this evening following a vehicle fire.
The closure has been enforced between Junction 22 (Saddleworth) and Junction 23 (Huddersfield) following what has been confirmed as a vehicle fire.
Dashcam footage caught the moment the vehicle, which has been confirmed as a crane carrier, exploded in dramatic fashion in front of a huge queue of backed up vehicles.
The footage, recorded by Matthew Hartley as he drove towards Manchester from Leeds, caught the explosion just before 6pm.
He wrote: “Caught this on my dashcam just before 6.00pm on 23/07/2020 whilst driving towards Manchester from Leeds. Explosion occured near junction 22 for Rishworth Moor.”
Emergency services are currently on the scene and traffic is “stationary for recovery work”, according to traffic website Inrix.
There are currently tailbacks to junction 21 for Milnrow – which are likely to get worse due to the seriousness of the incident.
There are also queues on approach to the closure with heavy traffic on the A672 into Ripponden and Denshaw onto the A640.
Transport for Greater Manchester are urging people to find an alternative way home.
This is a breaking news story. More to follow.
