Free school meals could soon be made available to all children regardless of household income – under new rules.
The new rules could see tens of thousands of kids receive hot school meals during school time, whose families perhaps couldn't afford them beforehand.
With around 400,000 kids having "very low food security", a new table has been motioned to benefit school pupils.
Sadiq Khan will soon write to the Secretary of State for Education in order to make a case for free school meals, for all school children in the United Kingdom.
This letter from Sadiq comes after the London Assembly approved the motion put forward by Fiona Twycross AM.
Fiona said: "Food insecurity blights the lives of hundreds of thousands of children in our capital, with many forced to go into school hungry and under-nourished. In one of the richest cities in the world, this is simply unacceptable.
"Foodbanks and other charities do an incredible job of providing emergency food parcels to those affected by food poverty, but the simple truth is they shouldn't exist in the first place.
"Many of the solutions to tackling food insecurity lie in the hands of national Government. However, City Hall should also play its role and build the case for extending the provision for universal free school meals."
We agree, let's hope this is pushed through.
