The UK’s best chippies have been revealed by a top chef
A top chippy tea takes some beating.
Widely regarded as a true British classic since time immemorial, fish and chips has endured a few image changes over the years (moving on from the days of newspaper wrapping) – but our appetite for it remains as voracious as ever.
In fact, fish and chips ranked as the most-ordered takeaway in the UK during lockdown.
It speaks volumes that, during the most unsettling period of our lifetimes, so many of us turned to a chippy tea for comfort.
It might seem like a simple meal. But even the best chefs take chippies seriously.
Gordon Ramsey howled in despair when an American woman completely butchered the recipe on social media, and Jamie Oliver has appeared on screens numerous times to share his own spin on the Friday classic.
But now, another TV chef is weighing in with his own opinion.
Speaking to The Sun, Michelin Star winner Nick Nairn cherry-picked some of the top chippies across the whole of Britain.
His choices were as follows:
- Aldeburgh Fish & Chips, Suffolk
- Hanbury’s, Torquay, Devon
- Anstruther Fish Bar, Fife, Scotland
- Lyme’s Fish Bar, Lyme Regis, Dorset
- Peter’s Fish Factory, Margate, Kent
- The Bay Fish & Chips, Stonehaven
- Bentley’s Fish & Chips, Blackpool
- D. Fecci & Sons, Tenby
- Fraser’s Fish & Chips, Penzance
- Maggie’s Fish & Chips, Hastings
- The Magpie Cafe, Whitby
- Colmans, South Shields, Tyne & Wear
Biased as we may be, it’s a bit gutting not to see any Manc chippies making the cut – especially considering the fact we’ve got some absolutely belting takeaways in the region.
The closest chippy to Manchester on the list is Bentley’s – which you might well have visited during a trip to Blackpool seaside one weekend.
