Manchester City have wrapped up another bit of business just two days before the end of the summer transfer window as they have signed Matheus Nunes from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Portugal and Wolves midfielder only joined the Premier League side last season, grabbing just one goal and one assist in 34 appearances, but has still looked like an impressive creator in spells during what was a difficult year for the club.
Now, though, just 12 months on from joining the Birmingham-based side which narrowly avoided relegation last season, Nunes is set to join Man City for a reported fee of approximately £47.2 million after both the players and the club put enough pressure on negotiations.
Wolves were said to be holding out for a figure close to £60m but with the 25-year-old having refused to train over the past few days and City offering another player as part of the deal, the two clubs are now said to have reached a verbal agreement.
It is reported there will be no add-ons and City youngster Tommy Doyle is expected to be going the other way for £5m, with the deal including a 50% sell-on clause.
Doyle, 21, is a Manchester local and has been with the club since 2019 but spent last season on loan at Sheffield United during their promotion campaign, grabbing four goals and seven assists also from central midfield, as well as winning the U21s Euros with England.
While his departure comes as little surprise — the prospect of playing under Pep Guardiola and his treble-wining team is one few can turn down — it has obviously come at the disappointment of Wolves fans, with BBC Sports correspondent Mike Taylor insisting the supporters “can understand his ambition without forgiving his method.”
He is City’s second signing in the last week or so, with talented Belgian winger Jeremy Doku having just joined the club from French club Rennes for a reported fee of £55.5m, and third this window overall. Happy with the business, Blues?
