Rio Ferdinand has stirred the pot on social media by joking he’s responsible for the Sergio Aguero mural in Manchester being washed away.
The former Manchester United defender uploaded a video to his Twitter page on Monday (June 28) in which he says he “made a few calls” to get the mural removed.
The Northern Quarter artwork – which captures the moment Aguero famously won the title for Manchester City in 2012 – was unveiled on Dale Street earlier this spring.
But after a team of workmen were recently spotted pressure-washing the mural, Ferdinand – a passionate advocate for the red half of Manchester having played at Old Trafford for 12 years – took a camera crew with him to capture the moment.
During the video, the defender says he was tired of walking past the artwork on the way to the studios for Five UK – a digital lifestyle magazine where he was works as Editor-In-Chief.
He is then shown thanking a group who are blasting the blue paint off the brickwork.
“It’s what I do,” Ferdinand tells the camera, before walking away laughing.
The Dale Street mural was created in honour of Aguero – who is moving to Barcelona this summer after a decade at the Etihad.
The Argentinian striker has cemented his status as a club legend since arriving in Manchester in 2011 – becoming City’s top goalscorer of all time.
An Ageuro statue is also being built outside City’s stadium as a tribute.
