In case you have no idea what we’re on about here, let us get you up to speed – boasting over 165,000 active members and growing by the day, the brilliantly-named Wetherspoons Paltry Chip Count is a public Facebook group that brings together people from right across the country to share in the clearly-popular activity of counting the amount of chips that the restaurant chain sticks on its characteristic blue floral plates and dishes out to customers.
As bizarre as it sounds, hundreds of people share snaps of their chip portions every week.
And although the group has produced some iconic reactions and pretty unexpected stars in its time, there’s one Manchester man who’s really got everyone talking at the moment.

Meet Boris Bennett.
Boris is boldly going where no one – or at least, where we can only presume no one – has gone before, and is currently on an important mission to collect one chip from every single Wetherspoons right across the UK.

He may be no stranger to posting in the popular group, having had a few of his chip portion posts make an impression with people in the group – in particular, the post where he recreated the Stonehenge out of his measly chip portion – but the post about his collector’s mission, which was shared earlier this month, has amassed a whopping 12,000 interactions and over 4,000 comments from impressed foodies.

Explaining his mission in his own words, Boris said: “Evening all. You may remember me from such fine works as the stonehenge/chiphenge post ™, but today however I bring you this.
“I am currently on a mission to collect and record one chip from every Wetherspoons in Britain, and here is what I have got so far. If you are wondering “does that bloke really walk around with a trading cards collection book full of chips?”

“The answer is yes, yes I do.”
Alongside the detailed explanation of his mission, Boris also shared a picture of his trading cards-style chip book.

According to the picture shared of his chip book, the Greater Manchester-based Wetherspoons’s Boris has managed to collect from so far are the Bull’s Head Hotel in Walkden, the Spinning Mule in Bolton, Mardi Gras in the Trafford Centre, the Robert Shaw in Bolton, the Seven Stars in Manchester, and the Thomas Burke in Leigh.
He’s also saved a chip from the Lord Wilson and the Cherry Tree, both in Huddersfield.
Of course, Boris’ post was an instant hit among the Wetherspoons community, with one person commenting: “I think you could be my soul mate,” and another added: “I hope there is an award for such a noble venture.”

We do too.

Free pints and live craft experiences coming to a Manchester pub for one night only
Daisy Jackson
A pop-up pub takeover is opening its doors in Manchester, where you can get your hands on a free pint as well as some amazing craft experiences.
The Uncommon Inn is being operated by premium Italian lager brand Poretti, who want to help us Brits break out of our daily routines.
Matt & Phreds on Tib Street will welcome The Uncommon Inn on Thursday 22 October, from 4pm to 8pm, giving visitors the chance to discover unusual creative skills and watch artisans at work, with a free pint in hand.
It comes after research commissioned by Poretti found that 61% of UK adults feel they are living on autopilot, while a quarter have not tried a new creative pursuit in five years or more.

The study also found that adults have an average of just 90 minutes of genuine personal time each day, with 58% spending that time watching television and 35% scrolling through social media.
Exhaustion and financial constraints came out as the main barriers preventing people from trying new things.
The Uncommon Inn has been designed to offer an alternative, bringing together a collective of specialist makers to showcase their skills in a familiar pub setting.
Visitors to the Manchester event can watch Giulio Miglietta embroidering personalised beer mats, using a vintage Singer sewing machine dating back to the early 1900s, alongside live hand-engraving and bespoke jewellery-style crafting using recycled silver.

Other demonstrations include 3D body-casting by sculptor Ami of Angelcasts and personalised, hand-engraved glassware from Leigh Calligraphy. Sabira of Sken Studios will also demonstrate how recycled silver can be turned into bespoke bottle openers.
Guests will be able to enjoy complimentary pints of Poretti while watching the makers at work.
Caitlin Maley, Senior Brand Manager at Poretti, said: “Modern life moves at an overwhelming pace, and it’s all too easy to fall into autopilot mode where routine replaces curiosity.
“We believe in celebrating intentional craft, rare skills, and authentic human connection – values that are at the core of our brewing heritage.
“We created The Uncommon Inn to turn an ordinary pub visit into an inspiring journey. By bringing together our Masters of Crafts, from chainstitch embroiderers to live engravers and musicians, we’re inviting pubgoers to slow down, pick up a new skill, and enjoy a pint crafted with genuine passion.”
The Uncommon Inn is at Matt & Phreds in Manchester on Thursday 22 October, from 4pm until 8pm.

Home Bargains has announced a special two-day closure of all UK stores
Emily Sergeant
Home Bargains has, once again, announced it’ll be closing all its UK stores on both Boxing Day and New Year’s Day this year.
And it’s to make sure staff get a ‘well deserved break’.
After what has been yet another busy year for the retail industry, many workers have been left feeling like they could do with a little extra time off, which is why Home Bargains is following on with what has become a now-annual tradition by shutting up shop on two bank holidays.
All of our stores will be closing for Boxing Day & New Years Day.
Announcing the move in a post on social media, the discount retailer confirmed: “All of our stores will be closing for Boxing Day and New Years Day. We would like to thank all our colleagues for how hard you have worked this past year, and want you to relax and enjoy the Christmas break with your loved ones.”
Of course, this isn’t the first time the retailer has kept its doors shut on bank holidays.
Many shoppers will recall it has made the same decision to give hardworking staff a break every year since 2019.
Explaining a little more about the decision taken to close all its stores, Home Bargains said: “As a family-run business, we know the importance of being together at Christmas with those we care about most, now more than ever.
