England will donate prize money to the NHS if they win Euro 2020
The Football Association (FA) is in line to earn around £24 million.
The England squad will be donating a large portion of their prize money to the NHS alongside various other charities should they win Euro 2020.
It is being widely reported that should Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad clinch the win over Italy in the final of European football’s flagship tournament at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, The Football Association (FA) is in line to earn around £24 million – with roughly 40% of that pot, in the region of £9.5 million, to be split among the 26-man squad.
The donation – which could run into the millions – will be made to NHS charities once the tournament has finished.
Finalisations of the plan are to be discussed in greater detail due to potential tax issues.
In this case, it’s not all about the win though, as should England finish as runners up in the tournament, then the FA would still land a figure around of £2.6 million less, which would bring the bonuses for the squad down.
But it’s said that the players intend to make a sizeable donation of their winnings regardless of Sunday’s result against Italy.
This is not the first time that England’s players have made a significant donation to the NHS throughout the COVID-19 pandemic however, as contributions were made via through the #PlayersTogether initiative last May.
Confirming their choice to make a donation to the NHS Charities Together last year, a statement released on behalf of England players read: “Following positive discussions with the FA, the England senior men’s squad are pleased to confirm that a significant donation from their international match fees will be made to NHS Charities Together via the #PlayersTogether initiative.
“This contribution will be taken from a fund already set aside to support a variety of worthy causes using all match fees collated since September 2018.”
