Wayne Rooney issues apology over hotel images
"I'd like to apologise to my family and the club for the images which were going round."
Wayne Rooney has made a public apology after photographs showing him asleep in a hotel surfaced online.
Pictures of the Derby County manager dozing in a hotel room with women posing beside him circulated on social media last weekend.
The former Man Utd and England footballer reported the images with a complaint of blackmail, but Cheshire Police have since confirmed they would not be taking action.
Rooney publicly commented on the situation for the first time on Wednesday (29 July) evening, saying he had “made a mistake”.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, the Derby manager said: “I went to a private party with two of my friends and from me, I’d like to apologise to my family and the club for the images which were going round.
“I want to move forward on this.
“I’m grateful to Derby County for giving me this opportunity to get this club back to where it belongs, and I’ll do everything in my power to make sure I do that.
“I’m looking forward to moving forward and preparing for another game on Sunday.”
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Rooney had also inadvertently injured one of his own players during training.
The manager tackled Jason Knight during a practice session and left the midfielder with ankle damage that could keep him out of action for up to three months.
