The historic coronation of King Charles III is finally happening tomorrow, and it’s set to be shown on big screens all over the UK.
It’s been a long time coming, but the coronation of King Charles III is to officially be held tomorrow on Saturday 6 May, and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has spent the last couple of months dishing out a budget of £1 million to local Councils to enable them to erect large screens in cities and towns nationwide.
Over 60 screens are expected to be set up throughout the UK.

Places such as public parks, gardens, cathedrals, and more are all set to be transformed into viewing venues, so that people can collectively come together and watch the historic event surrounded by hundreds of others.
It was confirmed by the DCMS that several screens are being set up in public places across Greater Manchester.

As well as showing the coronation ceremony and processions on the big screens, most of the venues also have other activities planned – including in Piccadilly Gardens, where a “party fit for royalty” is planned.

What can I expect from coronation day?
King III will be coronated alongside his wife and the Queen Consort, Camilla, in a religious ceremony held at Westminster Abbey in London – which is the same place his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II‘s coronation was held in 1953, as was her State Funeral in September of last year – on Saturday 6 May 2023.
The ceremony will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

Expected to be a more “simmered down” event in comparison to that of the late Queen’s, Buckingham Palace said the coronation will “reflect the monarch’s role today” and will “look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry”.

During ceremony, Charles will be anointed with holy oil, and then blessed and consecrated by the archbishop, before he is then crowned with St Edward’s Crown.
Where can I watch the coronation in Greater Manchester?
The DCMS has confirmed big screens will be in the following Greater Manchester locations:

Manchester Cathedral, Bolton’s Library and Museum Lecture Theatre, and Sale Waterside in Trafford have also confirmed they will be screening the coronation ceremony and proceedings, although these are not official DCMS events.

Where else is the coronation being shown in the North West?
As far as official Government-funded events go, the only other big screen to be erected in the North West is in the newly-established Eurovision Village in Liverpool city centre – which has been set up for fans to gather and celebrate the 2023 edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest.

Aside from DCMS screens, local communities throughout the region also have events planned.

‘Best signing of the summer’: Stockport County fans react to Dave Challinor’s new contract

Stockport County fans are buzzing with their first and arguably ‘biggest’ signing of the summer, as manager Dave Challinor has penned a new contract at Edgeley Park.
The majority of match-goers in Stockport have fallen in love with Challinor over the past few years, with the former County centre-back having now spent nearly four years as the boss and overseeing one of the best periods in their history during that time.
With seven promotions across four different clubs, three of those coming at Edgeley Park, he’s been touted as one of the EFL‘s most underrated and quietly successful coaches in recent times.
All that being said, and with the 49-year-old now signing a new deal at the club, supporters like those behind the popular The Scarf Bergara Wore fan podcast have said, “Could be the best signing of our summer, that” – a similar sentiment has been echoed in pretty much everyone’s reaction.

As you can see, while some jokingly said they were waiting to hear former Aston Villa loanee Louie Barry had been re-signed, the overwhelming consensus is that this is “superb news” for the thriving Greater Manchester side.
Having only just missed out on yet another promotion, which would have seen SCFC back in the Championship after more than two decades (having last spent time in the second division during the 2002/23 campaign, lasting just one season), keeping him tied down wasn’t a certainty.
The Chester-born ex-pro turned manager has attracted plenty of interest since his heroics at AFC Fylde and now at Stockport County, but owner and Vita Group founder, Mark Stott, as well as CEO Simon Wilson and the rest of the board were more than ready to reward his efforts with a new three-year deal.
If all goes to plan, this will see him remain at the club until at least 2028 if they make it into the Championship as planned, who knows how much longer after that.
Speaking on the new contract, Dave Challinor said via an official club statement, “I’m delighted to extend my stay at the Club beyond the end of the upcoming season. Last season gives me even more motivation to improve and aim to meet the shared objectives we have.
“I’m still highly ambitious, and feel that what we have built here over the last three-and-a-half years makes County somewhere that I want to continue to build, alongside my staff, players and everyone involved at the Club.”

Co-op is offering shoppers £10 discounts as a ‘thank you’ following its cyber attack

Co-op is offering shoppers £10 discounts to say ‘thank you’ for their cooperation during the recent cyber attack disruption.
Last month, the supermarket retailer’s stock was massively affected due to what was described as ‘malicious attempts by hackers to access [its] systems’, leaving shelves of stores across the UK bare, and payments by shoppers disrupted.
The company called it a ‘highly complex situation’, and also confirmed that hackers stole personal data – including members’ names and contact details.
The Co-op was just one business to be hit by cyber attacks this year, with other major ones affecting several other retailers like Marks & Spencer and Harrods.

Now that Co-op’s 2,300 food stores nationwide have successfully returned to usual trading, the retailer wants to show gratitude to its 6.5 million members who supported the business while the attack was taking place.
To say ‘thank you’, Co-op is offering its members a 25% discount on a £40 shop, meaning they can get £10 off their purchases.
“I’m very proud that, thanks to the work of our colleagues, we are very near to making a full and complete recovery from the recent cyberattack on our Co-op,” commented Co-op’s Managing Director of Food, Matt Hood, “and I’m delighted to see our stores looking back to normal and being able to serve our shoppers and communities.
“We are so grateful to our member owners for their support and patience with us during what was a very difficult time.
“I hope this gesture of appreciation goes a little way to showing them our thanks, with more value rewards to come over the summer.”
The 25% offer runs from today (Wednesday 18 June) right through to 24 June at all Co-op stores across the UK, and it can only be used by members one time.
