When it comes to a lunch break in Manchester we really are spoilt for choice – but there’s a reason so many of us make the pilgrimage to the Piccadilly Street Food Markets every week.
This little huddle of colourful huts on the edge of Piccadilly Gardens is home to some of the best cheap eats in town.
The area has had a major upgrade in recent years from the days when it was just a couple of rows of gazebos, and now you’ll find the same familiar faces whipping up tasty lunches for queues of Mancs, five days a week.
Whether you’re after a healthy falafel wrap, an enormous Star Wars-inspired smash burger, or a proper Indian grill, the Piccadilly Street Food Markets have got your back.
Here’s a quick guide to all the traders currently operating here.

There’s a reason Rita’s Reign attracts the biggest queues at the Piccadilly Street Food Markets – this is some properly good food.
You can get gigantic boxes stuffed with jollof rice, boneless jerk chicken, curry goat, vegan curry, plantain and more, with prices starting from £7. Unbelievable value for money.

The Bearded Feeder

A staple of the Piccadilly Street Food Markets, this stall is somewhere you can still get a filling lunch for a fiver – and you’ll get some pretty solid Star Wars puns on the side.
The Bearded Feeder serves the best smash burgers in the city from just £5, plus loaded fries, filthy hot dogs, tacos, and pulled pork.
Falafel King MCR
On the menu here you’ll find wraps stuffed with fillings that are great value for money.

Falafel wraps start from £5, but you can add in halloumi, aubergine, and fries, make it a meal deal, or order a falafel lunch box or salad instead.
Simply Delicious by Dine with Saira
Rice and three is a Manchester institution, but here lunch boxes include samosas, bhajis, seekh kebabs and loads more.
There’s a good choice of curries and grilled meats, plus samosas with the crispest pastry in Manchester.
Turkish Grill
‘Shawarma, doner, casserole!’ the team behind the counter at Turkish Grill holler out every lunchtime – a pretty effective marketing tactic, judging by the speed their meat dishes go flying out.
You can get a chicken shawarma wrap for £7, loaded with salad, meat, chips and homemade tzatziki.

Famous Philadelphia Cheesesteaks
It’s all about the meat here at Philadelphia Cheese Steak, served on chips, rice, or in huge sub rolls.
There’s a Buffalo chicken cheese steak, or a classic Philly cheese steak, which are both well worth your attention.
Nashville Chicken
The portions are as big as the flavours at Nashville Chicken, which serves a proper USA twist on all things chicken.
Expect chicken poutine, buffalo wings, Nashville chicken (obviously) and even a chicken cheese dog.
Piccadilly Bakes
You can’t walk past Piccadilly Bakes without their incredible cookies and cakes catching your eye.

Here you’ll find chunky cookies with gooey middles stuffed with pistachio creme, kinder Bueno and more, plus old-school chocolate cake and custard and loads more.
The Dutch Fishmen
Have you ever seen a potato being sliced into a spiral, jammed onto a stick, battered, and fried before? Well you have now!
The Dutch Fishmen are another familiar face around Manchester and also serve seafood dishes like cod bites, fried prawns and fish burgers.
Piccadilly Thai
Sometimes nothing will hit the spot quite like a hefty box of Thai food – and this place is a real craving-buster.
Their crispy chilli beef, bright orange sweet chilli chicken, Thai holy basil stir fry and many more dishes are available in mix-and-match boxes.

BangGaBangGa
This place used to operate under a different name and went insanely viral for its Korean corn dogs, which have molten mozzarella inside that will stretch for miles (okay not quite).
As well as these delicious snacks, they have authentic dishes like Tteokbokki, Korean rice cakes, served in a punchy and spicy sauce.
Chen’s Happy House
A hangover cure, boxed – each lunch at Chen’s Happy House is piled high with salt and pepper flavoured items, fried things, chips, rice, and noodles, with plenty of options.
Beloved Manc curry house Zouk to host fundraising dinner for people of Gaza and Palestine
Danny Jones
Zouk Tea Bar and Grill is hosting a charity dinner to raise money for the people of Gaza and Palestine.
The much-loved Manchester curry house is teaming up with Halal Dining Manchester (HDM) and Human Aid and Advocacy, the international organisation which supports survivors of war and persecution, to generate crucial funds for the countless civilians affected by the ongoing conflict.
With all proceeds going directly to the people of Palestine thanks to the efforts of Human Aid, the region will receive vital resources in the form of food packs, hot meals, water, hygiene kits and cash for families to purchase essential supplies.
People from all over Greater Manchester are being invited to come along and enjoy the feast and an array of mocktails whilst also helping do their bit.
Starting at 7pm, guests will sit down to a four-course meal featuring an array of traditional Indian and Pakistani dishes, as well as soft drinks and creative mocktails.
Once again, every penny from the tickets sold will go straight to the families of Gaza victims and other areas of Palestine, as well as a further charity auction and raffle following the dinner to bolster fundraising even more.
With Zouk‘s city centre venue always guaranteeing a vibrant atmosphere, further entertainment will also be confirmed closer to the event, which will be shared on the restaurant’s socials.
You can find the full menu showcasing every that’s on offer during the charity dinner HERE.
Speaking on behalf of Zouk, owner Tayub Amjad said: “We’re all in a truly fortunate position to wake up every day without fear that it might be our last.
“As the weeks have gone by watching the news coming out of Gaza is truly heartbreaking, we’re hoping for a strong turn-out on the night to support this event and help us raise as much money for Gaza as possible.”
Tickets for this important and fantastic value-for-money fundraising dinner are just £35 per person and will help provide invaluable support for those currently at risk.
The event takes place on Friday 19 July and you can secure your seat HERE; plus, if you wish to donate directly to the Gaza and Palestine fund set up by Human Aid and Advocacy, you can do so online.

Manchester’s first-ever tequila and mezcal festival is coming to the city centre later this year
Danny Jones
If you’re a fan of tequila – or you’re much more cultured than us and have a penchant for its equally delicious cousin, mezcal – then you’ll be happy to hear that a festival celebrating both is coming to Manchester.
You had us at alcohol.
Following their sold-out event earlier this year, Copita Mezcal and Tequila Festival is coming to Manchester city centre in September, where locals will be welcomed to the city for a full day of tasting, street food to pair with it, masterclasses and much more.
It’ll be the first time a festival dedicated to these two particular spirits has come to 0161 and looking at the full overview, we’re already licking our lips.
The new Mexican-inspired food and drink festival only debuted in Glasgow back in Spring 2023 but it unsurprisingly went down an absolute storm – after all, what’s not to like a big festival full of booze?
Set to take over the gorgeous Manchester Cathedral and turn the room into one big tasting floor, there’s going to be over 100 varieties of premium tequilas and smoky mezcals from some of Mexico’s most renowned producers on offer.
These will include prestigious brands like El Jimador, Del Maguey and Olmeca Altos; Vivir, Ojo De Dios, Bandero and El Tequileno with many more revealed in the run-up to the event.
As mentioned, there’ll also be guided tastings and masterclasses led by industry experts and festival-goers will gain exclusive insights into the craftsmanship behind these distinctive tipples, along with the opportunity to sample responsibly from dozens of stands from their very own limited edition ‘copita’, the traditional clay cups used to drink agave-based spirits.
Better yet, there’s no token system in place: this is all included in your ticket price, meaning you can truly make the most of everything on offer. We’ll cheers to that.

Colin Campbell, one of Copita’s co-founders said: “We’re really excited to be bringing Copita to Manchester. It’s gone down brilliantly in Glasgow the last two years so we felt now was the right time to take it on the road and we couldn’t think of a better place than Manchester to head to next!
“It’s a really easy-going event with a great atmosphere, lots of local street food, shopping and music, so whether you’re an aficionado or a casual sipper we’re confident you’ll have a great time.”
Once again, there’ll also be some fine Manc street food on offer – most notably Taco Or Don’t, the immensely popular pop-up shack which finished third in the British Streetfood Awards last year.
There’s plenty more on show that we could tell you about but it’s probably best to leave a little bit behind the curtain.
The second-ever Coptita Mezcal and Tequila Festival rocks up to Manchester on Saturday, 14 September and tickets are only £35 per session.
However, you can still get your hands on early bird prices that are good for 15% off (£29.75 total), which are available until Sunday, 7 July when you use the code EARLYBIRD15.
Sessions last three and a half hours and will take place from 12:30-4pm and 5:15-8:45pm, so it can be a daytime thing or an evening affair depending on how early you want to start drinking.
