Celebrity nightlife favourite Panacea used to be one of the hottest clubs in town, first opening its doors on John Dalton Street in 2005.
After over a decade of hosting sweaty, drunken footballers, wags, soap stars, and other members of the city’s glitterati at some of Manchester’s most in-demand parties, Panacea closed its doors during the covid pandemic alongside upstairs eatery The Restaurant Bar and Grill.
But now, two years after the site’s permanent closure – which also saw owners shutter its Piccolino sites in Clitheroe and York, as well as the Alderley Bar and Grill in Cheshire – it appears that the famous 00s nightclub club is plotting a return to the scene.
Even more surprising is the fact that, according to planning documents filed with Manchester City Council, Panacea is moving back into its original premises.
An application for a Panacea premises license in the Deansgate ward shows that operators are looking to serve alcohol in the basement of Ridgefield House, 14 John Dalton Street.

With opening hours listed from 11-4am Monday to Saturday, and 11-2am on Sundays, the application also asks for the provision of regulated entertainment (live music, recorded music, performances of dance), and late night refreshments.
The application then adds that the provision of late night refreshments will take place indoors and the supply of alcohol is for consumption on the premises only.
Speaking on the original closure of the John Dalton site two years, Karen Forrester – Executive Chairperson of Individual Restaurants Company – said: “The closure of these sites is part of a long-term investment and development plan for the future of Individual Restaurants.
“Our main priority is to keep our people within our Individual Restaurants family by offering opportunities to relocate to other Individual Restaurants’ locations, we will be supporting them throughout this process.”
The application can be viewed online and is open for consultation until 16 May 2023.

Aldi on Market Street is closed and Mancs say ‘that’s ruined my f***in day’

Aldi on Market Street is something of a Manchester legend, and often for the wrong reasons.
Easily one of the busiest, noisiest, most overwhelming places in the city centre, it’s nevertheless a lifeline for those who live and work in town.
Where else are you buying an aubergine and a tin of spaghetti hoops on the busiest shopping street in the North West, on a not-quite-payday-yet budget?
So you can imagine the small panic that’s rippled around Manchester when shoppers have arrived to the Market Street Aldi to find it closed.
Huge sheets of brown paper have been tacked into the windows and the shutters pulled firmly down for the last couple of weeks, leaving people to face the walk to the Aldi in Ancoats or – worse – Lidl on Piccadilly Gardens.
One person (whose username is, fittingly, Anxious Pirate) posted on Reddit: “Freaking out, what’s happened to Aldi Arndale?”
Meanwhile, a Tiktok video said: “Great Ancoats Street Aldi is going to be rammed. Niche but I’m sure others will feel my pain.”

In the comment section, one person asked: “I need to know why this wasn’t a bbc breaking news update”
Another said: “That’s just ruined my f**kin day.”
And someone else joked: “Just say you hate me and want me dead fgs.”
The good news is that the Aldi on Market Street hasn’t closed for good, and is just one of 25 stores undergoing a much-needed refurb.
The bad news is that’s going to take a while – the Manchester city centre Aldi isn’t set to reopen until 28 August.
Student police officer charged with off-duty rape and kidnap of woman in Manchester

A student police officer has been charged with the rape and kidnap of a woman in Manchester while he was off duty.
Mohammad Hassan, 23-years-old and of Asian-Pakistani ethnicity, has been remanded in custody following the charges, and has been suspended Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
The charges – which have been authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) following a police investigation – relate to reports made to authorities on the evening of Saturday 8 August 2026, which ended in a police pursuit on the M62 in West Yorkshire.
Following the police pursuit, a woman was safeguarded at the scene, and continues to be supported by specialist officers and support services.
Hassan has been charged with oral rape, kidnap, strangulation, sexual assault, theft of mobile phone, and dangerous driving.
He is set to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court today (11 August).
“GMP detectives and staff have been working on this investigation throughout the last 48 hours to ensure charges are brought in this case,” explained GMP Assistant Chief Constable, Mark Dexter.
“The victim is our priority, and we are ensuring she continues to receive specialist support. Criminal proceedings must now take its course without interference.
“I understand, and share, the feeling among the public and our thousands of hard-working, decent staff who will have seen this news. Proceedings are underway and necessary action will be decisively taken within the regulations.”
