A public appeal for witnesses to a series of violent incidents which occurred at Manchester Airport last week has been issued.

Following what has been a highly-publicised series of events over the past week, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has now set up a dedicated Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) and is urging any witnesses, or anyone with any information or footage, to come forward and assist with the ongoing police investigation.

Appeals have been issued for three separate, but related, incidents – which all occurred in Manchester Airport‘s Terminal 2 last Tuesday (23 July 2024).

According to GMP, the first incident forming part of the appeal is an altercation between passengers on Qatar Airways’ flight QR023, which arrived at 7:20pm – with the altercation either believed to have taken place during the flight, or afterwards in the T2 baggage hall.

The second incident is a “violent altercation” involving members of the public in the Terminal 2 Starbucks at approximately 8.22pm.

The third and final incident that witnesses are being urged to come forward for is in relation to the assault of three police officers, which occurred in the T2 car park pay point area at 8:28pm, and resulted in three officers receiving head injuries, including one with a broken nose.

Four men were arrested at the scene of the latter on suspicion of affray and assault of emergency service workers.

One GMP officer has also been “suspended from all duties”, it has been confirmed.

As the appeal for witnesses and information has been made, GMP has continued to inform the Greater Manchester public that the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is independently investigating the “use of force by GMP officers” that is shown within the footage that has widely circulated on social media and directly followed these events in the appeal.

GMP’s Assistant Chief Constable, Wasim Chaudhry, had previously said in a statement last week that “the use of such force in an arrest is an unusual occurrence” and one that the force understands “creates alarm”.
